How to Build an ISO 8 Cleanroom for Injection Molding Production

Do Injection Molding Factories Need a Cleanroom?

Not every injection molding process requires a cleanroom—but when producing precision plastic components for electronics, medical devices, or high-tech industries, airborne particles can directly affect product quality.

Dust contamination may lead to cosmetic defects, poor sealing performance, assembly failures, or rejected parts. An ISO 8 cleanroom helps manufacturers control airborne particles while maintaining a stable production environment.

To support a customer in New Zealand, Airkey designed and delivered a 60.4㎡ ISO 8 modular cleanroom that integrates contamination control, flexible operation, and future expansion into a single turnkey solution.

Why Choose a Modular Cleanroom Instead of Traditional Construction?

Many manufacturers need to upgrade production capacity without shutting down their factories for months.

A modular cleanroom offers several advantages:

  • Faster installation with factory-prefabricated components
  • Easy expansion as production grows
  • Lower construction disruption
  • Better cost control over the project lifecycle

For injection molding facilities, modular construction allows clean production areas to be added while keeping existing manufacturing operations running.

How Airkey Solved the Customer's Challenges

The customer required an ISO 8 cleanroom capable of housing large injection molding machines while  allowing operators to adjust airflow quickly during production.

Airkey designed a 3.7-meter-high free-standing modular cleanroom, providing sufficient space for tall production equipment while maintaining stable airflow. Patented structural technology supports large-span installations without relying on the existing building structure.

To improve operational efficiency, control panels were installed both inside and outside the cleanroom, allowing operators to adjust FFU fan speed without repeatedly entering the controlled environment.

The entrance location and observation windows were customized according to the customer's existing building layout, ensuring seamless integration with the production facility.

To minimize contamination risks, Airkey also designed separate routes for personnel and materials. Personnel enter through an air shower, large materials pass through a cargo shower, and smaller items are transferred using a pass box, reducing cross-contamination throughout the manufacturing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does injection molding always require a cleanroom?

No. Cleanrooms are typically used when producing high-precision plastic parts for medical devices, electronics, optics, or other contamination-sensitive industries.

Why choose an ISO 8 cleanroom?

ISO Class 8 provides effective airborne particle control for many precision manufacturing processes while offering a cost-effective balance between cleanliness and operating costs.

Can modular cleanrooms be expanded later?

Yes. Airkey's modular structure allows future expansion and layout changes with minimal disruption to production.

How do you prevent cross-contamination?

This project uses separate personnel and material routes, supported by an air shower, cargo shower, and pass box to reduce contamination risks during daily operations.
