ISO 7 Modular Cleanroom Solution for Plastic Technology in Spain

Controlled Cleanroom Environment for Plastic Technology and Automotive R&D

Plastic technology research and development often involves precision molding, optical components, medical device components, and advanced material development. These processes require controlled environments to minimize airborne contamination while managing electrostatic discharge generated during plastic processing.

For a technology center in Jaén Province, Spain, Airkey designed and delivered a 32㎡ ISO Class 7 modular cleanroom using the Light Series. The solution combines ESD protection, H14 HEPA filtration, controlled personnel and material flow, and a flexible modular structure for plastic technology research and precision manufacturing applications.

Plastic technology cleanroom with anti-static acrylic walls

Client Profile

The customer is a Spanish national technology center specializing in plastic technology. Its activities include the development and design of automotive lighting systems, research into recyclable food-contact plastics, new material development, product engineering, and prototyping.

The facility therefore requires controlled environments capable of supporting precision plastic processing and R&D activities involving sensitive components and materials.

Engineering Requirements

ISO 7 Contamination Control

Critical applications such as automotive optical lens coating, lens injection molding, and medical device components that contact the human body may require ISO Class 7 or higher cleanroom conditions.

The project therefore uses an ISO Class 7 controlled environment to support contamination-sensitive plastic technology processes.

ESD Protection for Precision Components

Plastic processing can generate static electricity, which may attract airborne dust and affect precision components.

The cleanroom incorporates anti-static materials to address electrostatic discharge risks while maintaining visibility and operational control inside the facility.

Controlled Personnel and Material Entry

Personnel follow controlled entry procedures including changing, shoe replacement, and air shower processes before entering the clean area.

Anti-static cleanroom garments, gloves, and masks are also used.

Materials are cleaned and outer packaging is removed before entering the controlled environment through buffer areas or pass-through chambers equipped with air showers.

Anti-static modular cleanroom for precision plastic processing

Airkey Engineering Solution

Self-Supporting Aluminum Structure

The main frame uses solid aluminum alloy profiles to provide structural strength while allowing the cleanroom to remain self-supporting and freestanding.

This modular structure provides installation flexibility without relying on the existing building structure.

Transparent Anti-Static Acrylic Walls

The wall panels are constructed from transparent anti-static acrylic sheets.

This solution provides ESD protection while maintaining high visibility of internal operations, making it suitable for R&D environments where equipment and production processes need to remain visible from outside the cleanroom.

Integrated FFU and LED Lighting System

The modular ceiling incorporates evenly distributed FFUs together with an integrated LED lighting system.

The lighting system provides an illumination level of more than 800 Lux, supporting detailed inspection and precision R&D work.

Separate Personnel and Material Purification

Airkey implemented dedicated traffic routes for personnel and materials.

The system includes:

  • Changing rooms
  • Personnel air showers
  • Dedicated cargo air showers

This separation helps systematically remove surface-attached particles from personnel and incoming materials before they enter the clean area.

Demountable Structure for Future Expansion

A demountable wall panel was installed at the cargo air shower location to accommodate the customer's current space limitations.

During the current phase, the area functions as a closed wall. If the cleanroom is relocated to a larger facility in the future, the same area can be converted into a buffer cargo air shower.

The modular structure can therefore be disassembled and reconstructed at another location without damaging the main system, helping protect the customer's equipment investment.

EC FFU with H14 HEPA Filtration

The cleanroom uses EC energy-saving FFUs equipped with H14 HEPA filters.

The system is designed to maintain stable ISO Class 7 cleanliness. An intelligent control panel enables centralized group control of the FFUs while also allowing individual adjustment of each FFU's fan speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What cleanroom class is used for plastic technology R&D?

This project uses an ISO Class 7 cleanroom with a total area of 32㎡.

Why is ESD protection important in plastic processing?

Plastic processing can generate static electricity that attracts dust. Anti-static materials help reduce this risk in environments handling precision components.

What type of HEPA filtration is used?

The cleanroom uses H14 HEPA filters integrated into EC FFUs to maintain stable ISO Class 7 cleanliness.

Can the cleanroom be relocated?

Yes. The modular design allows the structure to be disassembled and reconstructed at another facility. The project also incorporates a demountable wall that can be converted into a cargo air shower after relocation.

How was the cleanroom tested before delivery?

Airkey performed pre-shipment testing covering cleanliness, airflow velocity, and illuminance to validate system performance before delivery.
